The Color Run v. Run or Dye

Hello Everyone!

It's time for another cross-over post from my craft blog, The Dabbling Crafter.

This last weekend was my 10 year high school reunion. It was a great weekend. I saw a concert, went to a couple of events with my class and did another color run!

It was by chance that I ended up doing two color runs within 2 weeks of each other. I had already signed up for one, and my friends all started signing up for the second one...so I have two to compare now.

The two events were for pretty different size. The Color Run was in Des Moines, Iowa. It had around 30,000 participants and went around downtown. Run or Dye was in Rapid City, South Dakota. It definitely didn't have nearly that much...maybe 5,000 or so? It might be less. That's the number the Rapid City Journal is reporting.

If you'd like my tips about running a Color Run and keeping the color, see my other post here.

Packet Pick-Up

Winner: The Color Run

The Color Run had two different packet pick up times where the Run or Dye had only one. You'd think that since The Color Run had a million times more participants (okay...so like 5 times more) the pick up would have taken less time. Nope. It took longer to get checked in to the Run or Dye. Not only that, but the location was out of the way, where The Color Run was in the main part of town. I couldn't figure out why they wouldn't have the packet pick up at a sports store like The Color Run did.

The Route

Winner: The Color Run

I understand that The Color Run was in a metro area compared to the location I ran the Run or Dye at, but the Run or Dye run was terribly planned. First off, they didn't leave the fairgrounds they started on. That meant that you ran on grass, asphalt, a trail with potholes the size of a small child, and the best part...in circles inside a building. It was crazy. Plus, I had my Nike+ on for both races. The Color Run was right on. Run or Dye was only 2.6 miles! I imagine people thought they got killer times when they cut a half mile off the race!

Color

Winner: Run or Dye

The Color Run had Blue, Yellow, Orange and Pink. They also had purple and green available in packets. They had a mist water thing too so you would pick up more color. It was a good idea, but the color didn't seem that bright or saturated. Run or Dye had Green, Blue, Yellow, Pink. Purple was also available in packets. You got a bit more color in your packet and it seemed much brighter.

Atmosphere

Winner: The Color Run

The Color Run had a main stage that was pumping out dance music and doing Zumba before the race. Then when you got to the chute, the DJ was pumping music, throwing out free stuff and generally rocking. Not to mention the packet pick up was also a dance party in its own right. They also had a bad arse store to get all sorts of different stuff. (Run or Dye didn't have as much of a selection). Run or Dye didn't have a main stage playing music before the event and the music they did play in the chute was terrible. I mean...come on! Play music to pump me up...not slow songs! The stage they did have after the race was the same problem. Not to mention I swear I heard the "DJ" yelling at people every five seconds ("I told you not to use your packet yet" "You need to pay attention to what's going on up here"). Not the go lucky attitude of The Color Run. Plus The Color Run had more signage that was fun, more people moving around, a unicorn and a conga line!

So, I had tons of fun at each race, but I'll definitely hit up The Color Run again and pass on Run or Dye. I did hear that "Color Me Rad" is a fun race and they use liquid color as well.

Our "Before" Picture...we may have gotten some paint before the race started.

Our "After" picture

Our friend got crazy insane color!

Exercise Clothes: Plus Size Finds

Hello Fellow Bloggers!

It was a long wet weekend here in the midwest. We didn't get to do a whole lot outside on our Memorial Day weekend. My in-laws were visiting Saturday and Sunday. Yesterday my hubby and I (and kiddos) did a little shopping. I bought two new pieces of workout clothing. I know my husband is on the exercise bandwagon when he doesn't even bat an eye at me spending $80 bucks on shorts and a tank top.

I have done lots of googling lately on where to buy plus size workout gear. I do find it ironic that I finally get my butt into gear and I can't find anything to cover said butt.

A few weeks ago I went into Kohls and found some running legging capris that fit. They were XL and from FILA. (I got this pair and this pair...the first is a bit more comfy and compressing) They are quite comfortable to run in, although I've quite the time trying to get over the fact I'm wearing spandex in public with such a huge rear end. I have been wearing longer shirts, but I still have to remind myself over and over again that it doesn't matter what I look like because I'm getting out and moving and the haters gonna hate! I see that FILA does over extended sizes online, although I found their XL very stretchy.

I did want to find a nice tank top and shorts to wear. When I think running shorts, I think way...way...too shorts. I don't know why spandex butt is okay but short shorts butt is not. But that's how I think. I went into a large sports store and looked around. There was so much cute stuff but I knew none of it would fit me. I finally broke down and asked an employee if they carried any of the Nike extended sizes. I don't know why it took me so long to ask. I guess I felt I would get judged if I dare ask where the plus size exercise gear...like it was a oxymoron or something. She was very kind and continued to follow up with me once I tried everything on. I found two pairs that fit me  (This pair and this pair) and a tank that fit me too (Kinda like this one). I decided that I would stick with the longer grey pair for now (the first link). I could have gone a size down in my shorts but I decided I'd rather them be a bit baggy in case I decided to wear my leggings underneath. I was running late today so I knew I would have to skip my run and lunch, but I'm super excited to get out a run with them! Yay Nike for making extended sizes!!!

My running is going so well! Well, make no doubt about it, I'm slow. In fact some 80 year old man sped walked past me last week. I almost stopped to take a picture it was so ridiculous. Last Wednesday the weather was BEAUTIFUL. It was overcast and cool, and I felt like I could run forever! I ended up running 2.70 miles without stopping! Whoop whoop! C25K has been so awesome for me. I highly recommend the program! I think I might make my 5k without walking! I took some pictures after my run of the beautiful lake I'm fortunate enough to run around three times a week.

Wednesday's Run. Overcast and so wonderful to run in!

Friday's Run. Much sunnier and warmer, but still nice.

It's not a remote area...its right off downtown. However, last Wednesday a deer ran next to me! I think he was quite lost. It was a crazy sight to see.

Keep on everyone!!! :)

Love it or Leave it: Nutrisystem Review

I know I said I haven't really tried to lose weight before. I have tried different things hoping for a quick fix, and when they didn't work, I just quit. So, while I tried different products, I never really had my heart into it. I did get some knowledge of different products and services, and I hope to share my experiences via these new posts: Love it or Leave it.

My first review is of the Nutrisystem program.

Product or Service: Nutrisystem

When I tried it: About a year and half ago

How long I tried it for: A month and a half.

How much weight did I lose: 0

Positives: It was really easy to pick food to take for lunch. I started eating breakfast for the first time in a long time. I found I wasn't as hungry while between meals at work.

Negatives: The food was TERRIBLE. And when I say terrible, I actually threw up after just smelling one of the meals! (the BBQ wrap). The pizza and some of the breakfast items were the only ones I could bare to eat. The soups were pretty watery (suppose that's where the lack of calories are coming from), and the snacks had a very unusual taste to them..I imagine it's what food tastes like when you're slowly being poisoned by a homicidal spouse. The price was pretty steep and it's not exactly easy to cancel. It was hard to make meals for my family and then eat one of these quasi-foods
